Intentar crear música que se defina como autentica puede resultar todo un reto, mas no para este bien entrenado cuarteto australiano de artesanos experimentados. Pero, qué otra cosa se debe esperar de una banda instrumental formada por miembros de Ne Obliviscaris (Dan Presland - guitarra, Benjamin Baret - Bateria y  Brendan Brown - Bajo) y Ben Boyle guitarrista líder en Hadal Maw (también principal compositor aquí), quienes decidieron retomar su viejo proyecto y sorprendernos de principio a fin con un celestial death metal técnico.  

Al decir que una banda goza de “autenticidad”  en una palabra no promete nada en cuanto a fluidez o composición. Puede que no necesariamente implique belleza, pero sugiere una mezcla irresistible de sinceridad y autoridad con la garantía de que una banda es realmente lo que pretende ser. En el mundo del metal progresivo producido en serie, esas cualidades son muy deseables. Aunque escurridizas y difíciles de definir, capturarlas es fundamental para  diferenciar su valor en el mercado. De esa manera Vipassi introduce su opera prima Sunyata en la industria metalera, asegurándose un puesto entre los productos más cotizados. ¿Demasiado pronto para hablar del álbum del año? No con esto.

Śūnyatā inicia y un eco cavernoso se apodera del intro, “Gaia”comienza y desde los primeros segundos se acompaña de una melodía a voces angelicales que transcurren a lo largo de la canción y buena parte del álbum. Enseguida llega una explosión rítmica y el bajo toma por asalto el primer plano; notas limpias, un gatilleo ágil sobre las cuerdas dignas del revolver más veloz del viejo oeste y una suave brisa de riffage técnico, son la primera forma que toma Vipassi. Así abre Śūnyatā, mostrando el camino hacia un metal sutil lleno de intensidad. Un mar lleno de olas que sumerge en sus aguas, muy profundo pero transparente.

Mientras muchos músicos ya han renunciado al orden para dedicarse al caos total o a la técnica violenta, “Benzaiten”, “Sum” y “Elpis” nos muestran las 2 caras en una misma moneda, así como la segunda forma de Vipassi; fetichistas obsesionados con los detalles más enrevesados de sus canciones,  que  les consiguen una saturación de técnica milimétricamente ordenada sin dejar la ilusión del caos. “Samsara”, mi tema favorito por reunir todo lo antes mencionado, es la pieza más atmosférica de todas, la que culmina dejándote esa sensación de ente liviano trascendiendo hacia el plano etéreo. Si eres de pensar que el death metal técnico debe ser agresivo y por naturaleza extrema no puede coexistir con la calma sin sacrificar brutalidad, después de esto será difícil volver a esos argumentos. Pues con esa misma cualidad, Śūnyatā complace a cualquiera que guste del estilo mientras también es apreciado por el más ajeno al Metal.

Sin embargo, cuando se habla de las grandes ligas o de bandas que se atreven a legitimar su sonido, pareciera que es costumbre influenciarse unas a otras, es cuando surgen las similitudes y la brecha entre lo original y lo auténtico se acorta. Pues si bien Vipassi hace muy bien lo suyo, el parecido en el bajo a bandas como Beyond Creation y Obscura es innegable, o que decir de las atmosferas que dejan un sabor a Fallujah con su espectacular “The Flesh Prevails”. Podría entonces decir que no existe lo original y lo auténtico aquí, se mide como el grado en que estos australianos reproducen el encanto a la perfección de esas bandas con sonidos progresistas, añadiéndole su propia experiencia. Solo la experiencia de pertenecer a bandas como Ne Obliviscarises la que les permite llevar su música por parámetros no lineales, porque son sin duda el dinamismo de sus temas y la fluidez con que crean sus composiciones la mejor parte de este disco que lo vuelve un trabajo excepcional.  Una joya moderna que con el tiempo se convertirá en una reliquia sagrada.
